The ALI follows the CSULB catalogue section on “Faculty Responsibilities in Allegations of Cheating or Plagiarism”

Statement of Plagiarism:

Whenever you use the words or ideas of others, you have an obligation to quote and credit those sources. Any of the following acts can be classified as plagiarism: failing to provide citations for borrowed information, failing to enclose the borrowed words of another in quotation marks, and failing to render summaries or paraphrases into language varied enough from the original without citations.

One or more of the following actions are available to the teacher if a student has cheated or plagiarized on any work done for class:

Levels of reprimand/action:

  1. Review—no action
  2. The student receives an oral reprimand
  3. The student is required to re-do the work
  4. The student receives a score of “0” on the work
  5. The student receives a failing final grade in the class
  6. The student may be expelled from the ALI

Cheating/Plagiarizing during a Final Exam:

If a student is caught cheating and/or plagiarizing during a Final Exam, the student will automatically fail that class.

AI or Artificial Intelligence/ ChatBot:

The composition courses offered at the American Language Institute adhere to our department, college and institution’s standard of excellence. Our courses are designed to equip students with the skills they need to be successful critical thinkers and communicators. Hence, we do not accept work that demonstrates the use of any AI. Work submitted that has the content or voice of AI will not be accepted and will receive a zero for that assignment. Submissions are also subject to our campus software AI detection on Turnitin: this is used on Canvas.

Academic Integrity, Plagiarism and Appropriate Documentation:

All work that you submit must be your own, original work. Using the ideas or words of another person as if it were your own is plagiarism: this includes the use of AI/ChatBot, the use of any translation device such as “google translate” or other related service that does not involve individual thought and direct transference of language acquisition.

CSULB Title IX Reporting Policy:

Title IX prohibits gender discrimination, including sexual harassment and sexual misconduct. If you have experienced sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape, dating/domestic violence, or stalking, the Campus Confidential Advocate is available to help. Jaqueline Urtez (e: advocate@csulb.edu, p: (562) 985-2668) can provide free and confidential support, accommodations, and referrals for victims without having to report the assault to campus authorities. While students are welcome to discuss assaults with faculty or disclose such experiences in class discussions or assignments, both faculty and teaching assistants are responsible employees who are required to report all known incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct to the Office of Equity & Diversity/Title IX Office for follow-up. Reporting this information will result in the student being contacted by the Office of Equity & Diversity/Title IX Office with information on accommodations and reporting options for possible investigation. Students do not need to respond to the Office of Equity & Diversity/Title IX Office, but students who do wish to report the assault for possible investigation are encouraged to contact the Campus Confidential Advocate, who can help them through the reporting process, or they can report the assault directly to the Office of Equity & Diversity/Title IX Office by completing an online reporting form at https://www.csulb.edu/equity-diversity/title-ix or contacting the Office of Equity & Diversity at OED@csulb.edu.
