Course Description
This course covers the overall system of criminal justice from crime detection to the release and revocation of prisoners. The student will examine the role of law enforcement officers, corrections officers, probation officers, defense attorneys, prosecutors, and judges. The student will analyze the components of the criminal justice and juvenile justice systems (law enforcement, courts, and corrections). This course will provide you with a thorough overview of the fields of criminal justice and criminology. You will first learn the basics of the criminal justice system, including crime and criminal law, measuring crime, and theories of crime and victimization. Then we will explore each of the Cs of the criminal justice system: cops, courts, and corrections. We will also study the juvenile justice system and transnational criminal justice, including terrorism, homeland security, drones, border control, and transnational crime. By the end of the course, you should have a far better understanding of the criminal justice system in the United States and be prepared for upper-level criminal justice courses.
