COURSE DESCRIPTION
Destination Management and Marketing Organizations (e.g., Convention and Visitor Bureaus, Chambers of Commerce), also known as DMOs, are designed to market and promote locations as responsible, viable, and sustainable tourism destinations. This course will highlight the strategies that DMOs leverage, the organizations DMOs work with, and the indicators of success that DMOs use to accomplish these ends. Course topics include destination stakeholders, DMO operations, tourism product development, funding models for DMOs including taxation, indicators of success (e.g., benchmarking, KPIs, economic multipliers), marketing theories, and socio-cultural and environmental tourism impacts.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Being aware of the course learning outcomes is paramount to success in all of your coursework. The learning outcomes guide the material each of your courses covers and the manner in which the material is covered. Please make yourself aware of the elements of this course and all other pertinent courses. The course learning outcomes for all HOST classes can be viewed at this web address: http://catalog.highline.edu/
The Student Learning Outcomes for this course are as follows:

• Learners will examine stakeholder groups that DMOs work with to accomplish their end goals.
• Learners will assess Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that DMOs use to gauge success from economic, environmental, and socio-cultural vantage points.
• Learners will describe key selling points of geographic tourism locations including the ability of DMOs to create and manage tourism product development.
• Learners will evaluate DMO marketing plans using Internet research to examine destination resources.
PARTICIPATION
Hopefully participation is fun in our course together this quarter! Participation does not mean only one thing. You are a unique individual and your approach to participation can be as unique as you are.
Participation is technically graded. You can lose or gain up to 10% of your final grade in the course. If you are going to lose more than 3% of your final grade due to a lack of participation, then a meeting will be requested beforehand. You will not lose more than 3 points without being notified in advance and being given a chance to meet with your instructor(s). No student will lose more than 10% of their final grade due to a lack of participation. It is also possible to gain a maximum of 10% toward your final grade based on participation.
Losing points occurs primarily through cheating such as plagiarism, not attending class, treating members of our class poorly, or submitting multiple assignments after the due date. So long as you put forth a positive effort, we will have fun and your participation will likely be seen in a positive light.
ASSIGNMENT PROTOCOLS
All final exams take place face-to-face in courses that are scheduled face-to-face. Hybrid and online courses have final exams that take place online. The time and location of your final exam will be dictated by the College. Instructors cannot move final exam locations or times. You are responsible for knowing the time and location of your final exam. This can be located on Highline.edu.
If you miss the final exam but completed the rest of the course, then you may be assigned an Incomplete depending on the situation. Incompletes can be made up later in agreement with the instructor. You will not be given an Incomplete if you choose to depart campus early. Flight dates are not a reasonable excuse for missing a final exam.
Assignment Grading
All non-quiz assignments are graded on a rubric. The rubrics will be made available in Canvas prior to the due date.

Quizzes: There are 5 quizzes. Only your 4 highest quiz grades count toward your final grade in the course. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
Assignment: There is one assignment this quarter. It is the completion of a DMO certificate program I created in a consulting role for Seattle Southside, our regional DMO. You can complete this any time after Week 2 of the quarter. I recommend finishing it in Week #5 based on how much work I perceive the different weeks to be during the tenure of the quarter.
Extra Credit: There are numerous Extra Credit opportunities this quarter. In fact, HOST 155 is taught during summer quarters because of the Extra Credit opportunities available in our community. You will receive emails about each Extra Credit opportunity available as they become available. Each shift is worth 1% to your final grade. There are approximately 12 shifts available this summer. Thus, you could earn 12% to your final grade in the course.
