The overall aim of the course is to provide a general and theoretical introduction to translation of foreign languages in literature and medias. Since a very large part of the cultural produets that are available today in our society are translated or adapted from other cultures, the focus of the course will be directed towards the particular issues, translation of cultural and literary works and produets and their reception can give rise to, inter alia, the theoretical and practical aspects associated with the path from the original work to a new culture's readers, viewers or users through the work of a translator or a translating program. The course provides insight into major theories of translation as well as practical approaches to translation. There will be theoretical discussions about cultural transfer and reception, as well as close readings and analysis of chosen relevant examples. In addition, the translator's ethical considerations in connection with translation, the reasons for publishers for the choice of works for translation, and the significance of translation as part of the global and transnational question will be presented and discussed. But translation is not just a fixed concept, nor a simple one. The developping presence of online translation tools, linked with Big Data and Digital Humanities is a new and exciting field, that comes with its own sets of promises and questions. This class will also present these new possibilities, as well as the current debates surrounding these new progarns and technologies.
