Purpose and Course Objectives Welcome to English 101! We begin this course with the premise that you are all writers—and with the equally important idea that all writers are constantly improving their writing through revision and careful feedback from peers and your instructor. In this course you will further develop the skills you need to succeed in college courses where reading, writing, and critical thinking are important. This course therefore lays an important foundation that will help you thrive in nearly every course you will take at EvCC, as well as in writing contexts beyond the College and/or University in your personal and professional lives. By the end of the course, the goal is for you to be able to navigate the composing processes necessary to be a rhetorically-effective writer. In this class, we’ll practice various strategies for effective communication and produce dynamic documents geared toward communicating messages with specific purposes to specific audiences. We’ll learn that making choices when we write allows us to think critically and creatively about problems and solutions. We’ll also examine how reading, writing, analysis, and critical thinking are interconnected. We’re all taking part in an “ongoing conversation” that started before we joined and will continue after we leave. Understanding our place in this broader conversation allows us to draw on what others say in order to make our own contributions more meaningful.
