Course Objectives
The main objective of this course is to practice basic speaking and listening requirements within a university setting. You will listen to short academic lectures and find the main ideas and details. You will practice speaking tasks common to first year university classes including group discussions and presentations. By the end of this course, you will be able to:
1. Understand main ideas and details from 10-15 minute long academic lectures
2. Write dictations, dictoglosses, and lecture notes using an outline provided by the teacher;
3. Speak to others with moderate fluency for 10-15 minutes about familiar and academic topics: participate actively in group discussions;
4. Give a 10 minute individual oral presentation and 15 minute group oral presentation;
5. Speak with developing grammatical accuracy and sentence and word stress;
6. Use a variety of strategies to help you develop your general and academic vocabulary.
