This module enables you to read a range of classic post-1945 novels for children and
provides contexts in which to understand this extraordinary body of work. Course texts
include works of fantasy, historical novels, studies of growing up, and works exploring the
nature of belief (indeed, sometimes all of the above). The module begins with a three-
week critical and theoretical introduction which gives you a ‘toolkit’, a shared body of
concepts, methods, themes and paradigms. This is followed by a series of fictional case
studies. The module supports assessed work in both group and one-to-one contexts. As
we explore these remarkable postwar works and the profound issues they raise, you will
reflect on the interplay between the ‘social’ and the ‘individual’. Throughout the module we
will critically explore the assumption that writing for children is ‘simple’ and that the identity
of children is ‘natural'
