1. ESOL 113: Low-Advanced ESOL. Designed to develop student's ability to write basic
essays. Emphasis is on controlling grammar at sentence level and organizing ideas into
well-constructed essays with adequate support. Course includes reading academic text and
summary writing. S/P/U grading.
ESOL 113 Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, each student
should be able to
1. Write an introduction paragraph.
2. Write a thesis statement.
3. Write at least one body paragraph with supporting details.
4. Write a concluding paragraph.
5. Incorporate feedback to clarify meaning and develop ideas.

4. This is an S/U course. In order to pass this course, you must earn an average grade
of 75% or higher. Your grade will be calculated as follows:
● Classwork, Participation, Attendance = 30% of grade
○ For in-person students, I usually take attendance about 5 minutes after class has
started. If you arrive after I take attendance, this means that you are late to class.
I will mark you as “late” on Canvas. Note: If you are late, please come in quietly
so that you do not disturb that class. It is better to be late than to not come to
class!
● Essay Draft Writing = 30% of grade
● Reading Activities (Talk to the Text, Discussions, and Quizzes) = 40% of grade
