The rapid growth of K-Culture as a global hybridity leads us to ask some basic questions: Where can we find the root of this astounding phenomenon?:
Does the Korean Wave represent the soft power of Korean society? If so, how far does the Korean government control the K-pop business?; To what extent can we define the current Korean popular culture as the product of authentic Korean-ness? Relying upon the broad category of the contemporary Korean popular culture, this course will be an attempt to answer these questions (1) by tracing down the genealogy of "popular' culture in the modern history of Korea and (2) by mapping out the "contemporariness of popular culture from its entangled past.

The special topic for this fall semester is Korean cinema. It is designed to introduce various important issues from the history of Korean cinema from the Japanese colonial period to the Korean New Wave. As many critics already argued, Korean cinema has been in parallel with the modern history of Korea.
With this historical approach, this course focuses on various positive and negative influences of (1) domestic politics (e.g., tumultuous uproars of the 1960s. censorship of Yushin regime, neoliberal cultural policies after 1980s) and (2) foreign cinema (certainly the dominant aspects of American cinema) and at the same time, it also focuses on the development of Korean film industry which has been fluctuating at each stage of modern Korean history.
