Sociology is the scientific study of human social systems, institutions and interactions– from family structures to communities, to global political and economic relationships between nations. Students who take sociology courses can expect to study topics such as social classes, racial discrimination, gender roles, crime, school systems and other social issues that are relevant to the study of people and social structures. The Department of Sociology offers courses that facilitate the knowledge of society for students who wish to work with people and communities. The Department of Sociology offers both online and face-to-face courses including Introduction to Sociology, American Diversity, Social Problems, Crime and Society, and Qualitative Research Methods for students enrolled in the BAS programs. Career Sociology courses prepare students for transfer and for many job fields. Employers seek the following primary skills: translating theoretical ideas in to practical actions that address social problems; using scientific methods to collect data on groups; critically reading social scientific research; collaborating with others on group projects; writing analytically, and practicing empathy while working with others. Students who enroll in sociology courses often pursue careers that engage people and influence communities such as teaching/education administration, social work, non-profit management, business and marketing, law enforcement, healthcare, and government public service.
