Historians study the past in order to understand the conflicts, struggles, and achievements that shape who we are as human beings, where we’ve come from, and where we’re going. At Highline, students of history can learn about the rich, textured stories of the American past, explore the diversity of human experience worldwide from ancient to modern times, and investigate the patterns of integration that have molded our global age. Hands-on opportunities to analyze the historical record build students’ analytical skills, providing solid foundations for a variety of Associate of Arts (AA) and transfer degree options. Career History majors acquire a broad understanding of the forces that have shaped human society, but they also develop strong research, communication, critical analysis, and argumentation skills, which give them a competitive edge in many professions. History majors often pursue careers in education or research, but also careers in law, business, tourism, politics, public service, and intelligence work, and many rise to high positions in the career fields they choose.
