Description for 2025/26
Through class-based workshops, assignments and on-line resources, the module will focus on strengthening the key writing, reading and oral communication skills needed for success in academic work. Content will include: extracting information, summarising and paraphrasing, citing sources and compiling bibliographies, identifying the elements and functions of an academic essay, developing process writing skills, etc. Time will also be allocated for the development of discussion skills especially those related to presenting evidence, discussing an opinion, turn taking, etc.

To further enhance the key written and spoken communication skills of identified non-native English speaking students.

Description of Module Assessment
1: Assignment weighted 20%
Task 1 - written assignment
Students will complete writing tasks totalling no more than 600 words to develop summarising, paraphrasing, essay planning and/or assignment writing skills.
2: Speaking Assessment weighted 10%
Interview
Students will prepare for and participate in an interview of up to 12 minutes, during which they will be assessed on their understanding of key readings, organisation of an essay and a discussion of the development of an argument.
3: Assignment weighted 20%
Task 2 - written assignment
Students will complete a writing task totalling no more than 750 words to develop summarising, paraphrasing, essay planning and/or assignment writing skills.
4: Assignment weighted 20%
Task 3 - written assignment
Students will complete writing tasks totalling no more than 750 words to develop summarising, paraphrasing, essay planning and/or assignment writing skills.
5: Assignment weighted 20%
Task 4 - written assignment
Students will complete a writing task totalling no more than 1000 words to develop summarising, paraphrasing, essay planning and/or assignment writing skills.
6: Speaking Assessment weighted 10%
Small group discussion
Students will prepare for and participate in a discussion between the tutor and their peers (2-3 students) of 20 minutes, during which they will be assessed on their understanding of key readings, organisation of an essay and a discussion of the development of an argument.
