Intended for students taking or eligible to take ELA 20 or ELA 30. You can also get free software. See the Technology Resources page. How to be Successful in this Course Attend all classes and participate in all activities, class discussions, and assignments. Come to class having read and completed all assignments on time. The teacher and your fellow students are depending on you for the class to be a success. Come to class motivated to participate and learn. Participation means listening and speaking in class, asking lots of questions, working enthusiastically in different groups, and contributing to class discussions. Your success in a conversation class absolutely depends on participation. Treat the teacher and classmates with courtesy. It is important for you to listen to and work with many different people in class. When you are working with a partner or small group, listen carefully and help each other. Be quiet when the teacher or another student is speaking. Grades As well as homework, you will have quizzes and tests during the quarter. They will let you know how much you have learned. During the quarter, I will grade your assignments, quizzes, and tests on a percentage. At the end of the quarter, you will receive a letter grade. These grades are based on your completion of competencies for the skill areas of listening and speaking. Students must receive a “C” (75%) or higher to pass this class. There will be quizzes throughout the quarter (usually 10 questions based on the work we have been covering). If you miss a quiz, you will be given a zero for that assignment. No make-up quizzes will be given unless earlier arrangements have been made with the instructor. Much of your Canvas work will be for “complete” or “incomplete” grades. By the end of the quarter, students should have “complete” grades in everything (100%). Any less than this will negatively impact a student’s participation grade. Tentatively, grades will be calculated based on the following components: Homework Assignments & Quizzes 90%; Participation 10% Late Work Late work is accepted without penalty if it is received no more than a week late. Faith and Conscience Leave Per Everett Community College's Faith and Conscience Leave Policy, Everett Community College students are entitled to two days of excused absences per academic year (summer quarter through the end of spring quarter) for reasons of faith or conscience or for organized activities conducted under the auspices of a religious denomination, church, or religious organization. Such absences must be requested in writing within the first two weeks of the class or the first week for a late start class and may not incur additional fees for students. Student Medical Leave of Absence Policy When a health or medical emergency or condition renders a student’s continued participation in college academics, programs, or services impossible, impractical or unsafe to the student or any member of the college community, the rules and procedures around a medical leave of absence shall apply.
