Course Description
Second of a three-part survey of American history. A chronological and thematic study of U.S. History from the 1830s through 1919. The course will cover slavery, the Civil War, Reconstruction, industrialization and urbanization, the late 19th century agrarian protest movement, America’s development as a world power, the Progressive movement and America’s involvement in World War I. Specifically, our course begins and ends in war. We will survey the major turning points in US history, starting with the War of 1812 and concluding with World War I. Along the way, we will explore how Americans from all walks of life shaped the country’s political, economic, cultural, and racial landscapes during a period of rapid westward expansion. Ours is not a story about a budding nation, but of a multitude of people struggling to control and define the meaning of the United States of America during its swift and chaotic ascent to a world power.
