This course covers the history of warfare within a number of societies in the ancient Mediterranean, from ca. 2000BCE to ca. AD500. Topics include the development of military structures, their integration within society, the justification and causes of war, the conduct of war, and the effects of war on various segments of the population. Readings include a wide range of ancient sources and modern studies of ancient warfare. The instructor is Professor Rosemary Moore.
