Canada has always been difficult to define. Citizens of Canada struggle to describe “Canadian nationalism", or answer the question “what does it mean to be Canadian?", as opposed to their American cousins, who are much more certain when it comes to answering these kinds of questions. The Canadian response to questions about nation and nationalism is often negative – being Canadian essentially means not being American. This course aims to provide some answers to these difficult questions, and in particular, the focus will be on Canada's dual and often conflicting “European" and “American" roots. Canada is a unique country in that its politics, economy, society, culture and identity are deeply influenced by both the US and “European" models. In many ways Canada resembles a typical European country – its social welfare programs, for example, align more closely to the European model. On the other hand, Canada's sporting culture is much more “American" in orientation and scope. The course will also examine the controversial question of Canadian values, and whether they are converging with or diverging from American values – in other words, we will examine the question: are Canadians becoming more or less American? The underlying theme of the course is that Canada has historically (and to the present day) been pulled between the European and American poles, and as a result its historical development and its present characteristics show deep imprints of both.(Aarhus University course catalogueより)
