This course is all about improving your English listening skills. Learners of a second language sometimes believe that listening is less important than other skills. This is a mistake! University classes will require you to listen to and take notes about 50- to 75-minute lectures, and you can't assume that all the information is also in a textbook. We will begin the course by evaluating your strong and weak points when listening in English. After that, our focus will be on strategies for listening to, understanding, and evaluating lectures, class discussions, and related presentations. We will work on recognizing main ideas, important supporting details, and the connections between ideas; understanding faster speech; and getting information from nonverbal clues such as stress, intonation, and body language.
