Objectives and Goals of the Course 1. To explore the various genera of American Jazz music 2. To show how different musical and cultural elements came together to create jazz music 3. To examine Jazz in relation to larger socio-cultural processes as it was and as it is today. 4. The analysis aspects of this course will include: a) Develop listening skills as to identify specific style, composer, and/or soloist(s) b) To gain an understanding of performance practice of each specific period in the development of jazz and who the major innovators of these different styles were. c) Identify specific instrumentation (front line vs. backline instruments) 5. To look at the role of the jazz musician and the art as it was in the past, stands today, and possibly in the future.
