The course provides basic knowledge about philosophy, its history of ideas as well as its different conceptual branches and schools of thought. During the course the students will get an opportunity to learn Ancient Greek philosophical basics – the works of Plato and Aristotle. The connection between ethics and political philosophy will be strongly emphasized in the philosophy of Ancient Greece and other periods. The concept of social contract will be studied in the works of Th. Hobbes and J. Locke. Students will also learn the principles of tolerance and how they transformed in the 21st century. Lots of attention will be given to the philosophy of pragmatism that we find in the writings of W. James and R. Rorty. The philosophical branch of hermeneutics as the philosophy of interpretation will be explained on the basis G. Vattimo, P. Ricoeur and Gadamer. For the occasion of teaching this course in a Lithuanian university, Lithuanian philosophy will be outlined. Lithuanian philosopher such as A. Maceina, J. Girnius will be introduced as classic ones along with the introduction to contemporary Lithuanian philosophers such as G. Mažeikis, A. Šliogeris, L. Donskis, A. Sverdiolas, J.
