The course aims to develop in students a comprehensive understanding of the novel genre and its subgenres; an awareness of the history of the genre from its earliest exemplars to its most recent developments, with emphasis on the British novel and selected British novels in particular; knowledge of the development of the genre in the socio- historical context; a sound understanding of the major critical approaches to the analysis of the novel; and the skills required for independent analysis of the novel.
