Description: High-advanced ESLA. Learning a variety of modes including Argumentation. Focuses on developing details and logical organization. Emphasizes controlling grammar, reading, and developing an academic writing style. Includes critical analysis of college-level texts, summary/reflection writing and citation. Students who take both ESLA 117 and English 100 can apply credits toward graduation for only one of them. Students with a "P" grade can take English 101 but must concurrently take either ESLA 91 or English 188. S/P/U grading. Near the end of the term, a panel of teachers will read all of your Out-of-Class Essays (OCE) & In-Class Essays (ICE). The panel will decide if you have the ability to succeed in English 101 or if you need more practice in ESLA 117. Corse Objectives: This course will teach you the writing, reading, and summarizing skills that you will need to be successful in college. Course requirements to pass ESLA 117 1)Essays: You will write 4 Out-of-Class Essays (OCE) & 3 In-Class Essays (ICE) 2)Reading and Grammar: You will need an average of 75% on quizzes. You will also need an 80% to pass Grammar Terms quiz 3)Discussion: You will need to show your ability to be active in group discussion. 4)Reading journals: You will read at least one hour a week outside of class and write a reading journal. You will give me a reading journal on eight (8) Mondays during the term. 5)Attendance: If you are absent from for more than five (5) classes, you cannot pass this course.
