This is an advanced English course where students will enhance their critical and argumentative skills while discussing and debating in a range of social contexts related to Finland in an academic context. Different cultural perspectives will be one of the key elements in our discussions as the course is intended for both Finns and international students. The emphasis will be on developing advanced language skills for effective communication and interaction in a multicultural context in small talk situations, general class discussions, as well as presenting content in multimodal form.
Learning outcomes: After completion of the course students are expected to
- be aware of values and attitudes embedded in Finnish society,
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of English language competence in formal academic and informal situations,
- activate and produce language to give opinion, criticize and support arguments, in general and current issues,
- demonstrate effective collaborative and multicultural team-working skills through participation in joint projects.
