The course complements Studio Foundations 1 to provide an intensive introduction to the materials, methods, concepts and concerns of contemporary visual arts practice. Lecture and studio delivery continues the development of agile and lateral thinking through visual methods rooted in disciplinary and interdisciplinary knowledge frameworks. Studio investigations are grounded in an interdisciplinary framework of sculpture, jewellery/small objects, painting, photography and print media. Studio Foundations is a flexible course that pairs methodical and rigorous disciplinary knowledge/skill-building with investigations of contemporary concepts and concerns in the visual arts. Students will experience a comprehensive array of modular intensives in which they will explore materials, techniques, and concepts specific to visual arts disciplines. Each intensive unit will be concluded with a Pro Seminar, a group critique and an assessment. Students will also establish an online ePortfolio that documents studio processes and reflections over the course of the term. After Foundations, students may choose to focus in a particular studio area, or to explore between areas.
