Course Description: This is an advanced reading and vocabulary course designed to build upon Reading and Vocabulary 6. The course tasks include reading and analyzing longer texts, as well as student-generated discussion. Students practice reading skills through abstract and global topics including environmental sustainability Program Learning Outcomes: This course will partially achieve the following program learning outcomes: • Develop an awareness of self and society in an intercultural setting; • Express information and ideas in a variety of forms • Utilize critical thinking processes and problem solving techniques in academic and professional situations • Evaluate current issues and events to explore personal and social responsibility in a global context • Examine environmental sustainability practices within the Canadian context. Essential Employability Skills Outcomes: This course will partially achieve the following essential employability skills outcomes: • Respond to written, spoken, or visual messages in a manner that ensures effective communication • Locate, select, organize, and document information using appropriate technology and information systems • Analyse, evaluate, and apply relevant information from a variety of sources • Show respect for the diverse opinions, values, belief systems, and contributions of others Course Content: • Critical reading strategies • Critical thinking • Inferences • Collocations • Academic Word List Evaluation: Grades are based on: 50% Assignments 50% Tests Assignments: • Discussion Boards – Units One, Two, Three 15% • Vocabulary Journals (submit 2) 20% • In- class assignment(s) 15% • Class tests 30% • Final Exam 20%
