This course is designed to be an introduction to ceramic materials and techniques. Through making objects, students will experience the creative and physical properties of clay. Students will be introduced to formal visual language, conceptual thinking, and creative problem solving. Topics covered will include wheel throwing and hand building, decorating and glazing, loading and firing kilns, as well as mixing clays and glazes. Other topics explored will include ceramic history and contemporary trends, with information being presented through readings, image lectures, class discussions, and critiques. Emphasis will be on personal growth through technique and concept. No previous ceramic knowledge is needed or presumed.
