Søren Kierkegaard is often called the founder of modern existential thought. Focused on the concept of existence Kierkegaard has laid the ground for analyzing and understanding modern man and modern society. The rich and diverse work of Kierkegaard has influenced not only modern philosophy and theology but also modern literature and art. Today his work marks an essential contribution to the understanding of the human condition in its complexity and diversity.
The course will introduce the many facets of Kierkegaard´s work and the historical background of its formation (the so-called “Golden Age Denmark") as it will also actualize Kierkegaard´s thinking in conversation with contemporary thinkers such as Heidegger, Sartre, Arendt, and Habermas. In this way, the course will provide tools for discussions of contemporary political, cultural, and social topics rooted in the perspective of personal and existential judgment.
